Why do you go away?

Salt Seeker profile

THE SALT SEEKER

Thoughtful. Unconventional. Stoic.
People tell me I’m always off on an adventure. I have a knack for finding unique, lesser-known experiences and travelling solo with relative confidence, though I do go on tours sometimes. Born in Singapore, lived in Australia and the UK, exploring the world. Here are my discoveries.

Why I travel

Unexpected adventures and interesting times

Pratchett is my favourite author. He wrote a lot about travel and cultures, surprises and disasters, always with a wry sense of humour. I travel to relax, to explore, and to immerse myself in experiences that broaden my perspective. I'm not afraid of being alone with my thoughts. Sometimes I go on unexpected adventures, which as a neurodivergent individual can be equal parts frustrating and rewarding. Some of these end up being the best travel stories.
Adventure is out there! Caw caw!

Why do you go away?
So that you can come back.
So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colours.
And the people there see you differently, too.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.

A Hat Full of Sky, Terry Pratchett

How I travel

Adventure in Moderation

I started solo travel in 2016 just before moving to London. I'm always on the lookout for underrated locations and special experiences. I'm an island specialist, and an active, but not extreme, outdoor explorer. I sail, not banana boat; snorkel, not dive. Day hikes, not expeditions; paddling, not surfing. And I've been known to occasionally climb, bike, canyon, horseride, and do whitewater things. The outdoors over cities, unless there are ruins involved. Wildlife is a plus, and I have a soft spot for marine megafauna. I usually try to get around without driving, because I'm a competent, but not confident, driver (I drive on the left, people stress me out, but I'm good in the outback!). Plus in case it wasn't clear, I also enjoy boats.

Adventure in moderate, sensible doses. That's what I like and what I'm good at. And returning to a comfortable bed and hot shower now I'm old and injured is pretty much non-negotiable. Boutique stays make me happy. I'm allergic to hostels and hotel chains. Life is short, but I still appreciate premium value over excess. I don't like having my picture taken and am bad at selfies, so this will be the only place you see me. Yes, that's a baby (feeding) whale shark, and yes, that is how much of me I managed to capture in that selfie.

What's in a Name

Why The Salt Seeker

Authenticity is a core value, and it was important to have a name that reflects me. As a sailor and non-motorised watersport lover, I keep coming back to JFK's quote about salt. Salt in our blood, our sweat, and our tears. The body needs salt to live, and travel makes me feel alive.

I really don't know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it's because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it's because we all came from the sea.

And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came.
